Give Way or Not Give Way, That is the Question

Roundabouts

The majority of drivers, when they approach a roundabout appear to be under the impression that anyone approaching the roundabout from their right, unless road signs or traffic control indicate differently, should be given priority.

This, however, is not the case as vehicles approaching from the right, unless road signs or traffic control indicate differently, only have priority once they are on the roundabout and not simply approaching it. The roundabout approach should always be with due care and attention and drivers should be prepared to give way to meet the requirements of drivers who are actually on or crossing onto the roundabout section of roadway first.

Most problems with the give way to the right scenario are associated with mini roundabouts, where many drivers approaching from the right do so with no intention of slowing down unless, of course, they are also faced with an approaching vehicle from their right.

Another important point to remember is to watch carefully for vehicles on the roundabout, always be aware that they may not be signalling correctly if at all.

In drawing attention to the above, Activ Birmingham do so to, hopefully, encourage drivers to approach all roundabouts carefully and with care and attention for other road users in mind. When driving always remember that whatever the rights or wrongs, you have no rights when you are dead. Be careful out there.
