Lights - When & How They Should be Used

Add News

Fog Lights

You must not use fog lights, either front or rear, unless visibility is seriously reduced, i.e you cannot see for more than 100metres (328ft).  How many of us continually drive with both headlights and fog lights on?  When visibility improves, fog lights must be switched off to avoid dazzling other road users.  How many of us, in good weather conditions, have driven behind vehicles whose drivers persistently display rear and dazzling fog lights and if you flash them they have no idea why?

Hazard Warning Lights

These should be used when the vehicle is stationary to warn that it is temporarily obstructing traffic.  They should never be used as an excuse for illegal or dangerous parking.  Hazard warning lights must not be used whilst the vehicle is moving unless you are on a motorway or unrestricted dual carriageway where they can be legally used to warn other vehicles of an obstruction or hazard ahead.  Even then they must only be used for long enough to ensure that your warning has been observed.

Parking at Night

Where parking is legally allowed without the need to display parking lights, vehicles not exceeding 1525kg unladen weight or carrying more than eight passengers, they must not be parked at night facing the direction of traffic flow unless in a recognised parking space.  All vehicles must display parking lights when parked on either a road or lay-by, where the speed limit is greater than 30mph.  It is also important to note that you should not  park at anytime opposite to or within 10.0 metres of a road junction and vehicles must also be closely parked to the kerb.

All vehicles in excess of the above weight limit and/or passenger carrying capacity, must always, when parked on any road or lay-by, display parking lights during periods of darkness.
