Birmingham - There's Something for Everyone: 

In the Saxon 6th century, Birmingham was a small settlement in thick forest - the home (ham) of the tribe (ing) of a leader called Birm or Beroma.  Today Birmingham or Brum as it is called by the population of the nearby Black Country, is England's second city after London, with a human residence of approximately 970,000.  It is easily accessed via rail, road, air and for any sailors the canal network, more canals exist in this city than Venice.

Other cities are in envy, when you consider Birmingham's 6,000,000 trees, more parks than any other city in Europe, a record breaking 14 consecutive gold medals from the Chelsea Flower Show and it's national Britain in Bloom awards.  If this wasn't enough, for the green fingered amongst us, you can also visit the Botanical Gardens & Glasshouses, where the true beauty of nature has to be seen to be believed.

The city boasts many places of interest in the shape of the numerous theatres, museums, century old halls and houses, Brindley Place, the National Indoor Arena, the National Exhibition Centre, the International Convention Centre, the Symphony Hall, Cadbury World (perhaps not for the dieticians amongst us), the Jewellery Quarter, the Sea Life Centre, the Bull Ring Shopping Centre and it's indooropen & rag markets and for the cinema fans, these are in abundance throughout the city.

Millennium Point, which contains Think Tank, the most modern of science museums (10 themed galleries of immense, inspiring, interactive fun) investigate everything from full size locomotives and aircraft to intestines and taste buds.  There is also an awe inspiring Planetarium as well as the Imax cinema, with by far the largest movie screen in the Midlands (it's as high as a 5 storey building and as wide as 4 buses) and it also has 3D.

A short drive away is Drayton Manor Theme Park and Zoo.

For the shoppers, you will not be disappointed with the excellent and varied shops and stores awaiting your visit.  If you want to take your shopping experience to a totally new level why not try The Mailbox.

The city boasts 3 Universities - University of Birmingham, Birmingham City University and Aston University as well as over 430 schools.

Whether you want to paint the town red or just let your hair down after a long day at work, why not visit Birmingham's Broad Street.  With bars and clubs a plenty you're sure to find something to match both your mood and taste.

Birmingham is also the home of many past and present rock bands including Duran Duran, ELO, Ocean Colour Scene, UB40, Dodgy and Black Sabbath to name but a few.

The City Library, Europe's largest, is the city's biggest building and lends some 8,000,000 books each year.

In sport, previous Indy and Formula 1 Champion Nigel Mansell lived and worked in Birmingham, it also boasts two Premiership soccer clubs in Aston Villa and Birmingham City and locally Championship side West Bromwich Albion.  It is also the home of county cricket club Warwickshire.  For you golfers the Belfry course is the place for a round, having been previously graced by some of the world's finest.

In Birmingham for the general knowledge experts, John Wright invented electroplating, minister Joseph Priestly discovered oxygen, later in 1888 the pneumatic tyre was invented by John Dunlop.  During the Second World War, Spitfire fighter planes were built in Birmingham's Castle Bromwich area.
