Applying for and Attending a Job Interview.

Add News

Activ Birmingham has provided information below which you may find of benefit prior to and during a job interview. Please take the time to read and digest as it has been put together by two ex managers fully experienced with Job Interviews from both sides of the table.

1      When applying for any job, make sure that the information you provide in the application is both honest and accurate. Most companies ask all the applicants to provide a Curriculum Vita (CV); again you must be honest about qualifications obtained and all previous employment. Don’t lie as, most companies prior to any job offer, will carry out all necessary checks to confirm the accuracy of the information an applicant has provided.

2       Always ask to see a copy of the of the job specification. Study it carefully and make sure that you fully understand what it entails and unless a training programme is on offer, don’t waste the time of the company concerned, or yourself, if it is the type of work of which you have no previous experience.

3       If you are successful in being selected for an interview, obtain as much information as possible about the company concerned, fully read the job specification and note down any questions that you would like to ask a future employer. They will see from such questions that you have prepared  yourself well and that you have also investigated the company concerned.

4      When you attend the interview make sure that you are correctly dressed, clean shaven, unless you support a beard and/or moustache, if you do then make sure that they are even and properly trimmed. One other word of advice is that most interviewers prefer not to see pierced ears, noses, tongues, etc. You have been warned.

5      Take with you any original certificates, degrees, GCSE’s, apprenticeship indentures/awards etc., obtained and identified in your CV and offer them to the interviewer.

6      Always attend an interview with plenty of time to spare. Remember traffic congestion and incidents are a regular occurrence and to be late for an interview will not help your cause. It will also give you time to settle, relax and go over your approach.

7      Important, before any interview it is vital to remember that you only have one opportunity to make a first impression. Sell yourself; be enthusiastic and lively with your responses.

8      On walking into the interview room, be totally confident. When questions are asked of you, listen to them and make sure you understand what is being asked, if you are unsure then ask for clarification. Look the interviewer straight in the eye and without rushing clearly and carefully provide your answer.

9      You will normally be asked if you have any questions, make sure that you have.

10    Think about the type of questions you may be asked and practice your answers, again and again and again. Think about your hobbies and interests, have your answers ready in case you are asked. Remember those on the other side of the table may have similar interests.

11    One question which is regularly asked is “Why should we offer you the job?”

From all at Activ Birmingham, we sincerely offer you our very best wishes for a successful job application/interview.
