Launched in February 1974 on 261 meters medium wave and 94.8 FM, BRMB, at the time, became the fourth commercial and totally independent radio station in the UK behind Radio Clyde, LBC and Capital Radio to begin broadcasting and it quickly became popular with the residents of Birmingham and the local Black Country. In 1986 it changed its broadcasting frequency from 94.8 to 96.4 FM.
The likes of Tony Butler, Less Ross, Ed Doolan and Phil Upton became regular presenters for BRMB with Les Ross, in presenting the stations breakfast show from March 1976 to March 1979, with a further period from August 1993 to September 2002, becoming the UK's longest breakfast show presenter.
Orion Medias, Tom Ross who is currently head of sport, also proved successful with BRMB when West Midland football matches commenced being broadcast live by the station each Saturday of the football season, which also included regular updates on the other West Midland team games.
Following government disapproval in 1988 of simultaneous programmes on both FM and the medium wave band, a second station Xtra AM was launched on the frequency 1152 kHz. This became a ‘gold' BRMB service playing classic hits and the original BRMB service began to cater more for the younger listeners. At this time BRMB was part of Midlands Radio plc which was bought by Capital Radio in 1993. Xtra AM was broadcast for nine years until most of its programming was transferred to London.
The BRMB name is not a short form of Birmingham Radio Midlands Broadcasting as many people believe, but instead comes from the original company name of Birmingham (BRM) Broadcasting (B)
The BRMB studios and the headquarters of Orion Media, which purchased BRMB from Global Radio in July 2009, can be found in the Birmingham City Centre at Brindleyplace, which is directly adjacent to Birmingham's Broad Street and in close proximity to the Birmingham NIA, Symphony Hall and Birmingham's well known Walk of Stars footpaths. BRMB was initially based in Aston Road North, which is in the Aston area and close to the famous and unforgettable M6 Spaghetti Junction. The venue was home to Alpha Television Studios, ABC and ATV Television until 1970.
Strangely, the new headquarters are just a short distance from the now closed ATV studios following its move from Aston Road in 1970.
The station also provides network output for Orion Media's West Midland's radio stations, namely Wyvern, Mercia and Beacon. Since August 2011, programming for Mercia radio has been produced and broadcast from the BRMB studios
