Election 2010 Results - Hodge Hill Constituency

Add News

Constituency Profile:

Stechford, as this seat was called originally, was created in 1950 from part of Yardley and has been under Labour's control ever since; it's first MP was former home secretary and chancellor Roy Jenkins and he held the constituency for some 27 years.

There has only been a slight blip on Labour's control of this constituency, which came in 1977 following Jenkins' departure to become President of the European Commission in Brussels. This created the need for a local by-election which saw control pass to the Conservatives, however this was relatively short lived and Terry Davis regained Labour's grip on the constituency at the general election two years later. Subsequent elections saw Davis' majority increase to a 43.9% margin in 2001.

Boundary changes for the 2010 election will see Bordesley Green, which spans the south part of the constituency as far as the west of Birmingham Yardley, brought completely under this seat, along with Washwood Heath. The changes to the boundary have also seen the loss of part of Stechford and Yardley North to Birmingham Yardley.

The Hodge Hill constituency is made up of the four wards of Bordesley Green, Hodge Hill, Shard End and Washwood Heath; it stretches from Saltley towards the eastern suburbs.
