Election 2010 Results - Ladywood Constituency

Add News

Constituency Profile:

Despite it's various boundary changes over the years Birmingham Ladywood is an old name, in the 1920s Oswald Mosely was defeated here by Neville Chamberlain. The constituency has predominantly been under Labour control since 1929, the only blip being when control passed to the Liberals between 1969-70 following Wallace Lawler's success at a by-election. In 1983, following John Sever's deselection prior to the general election, Clare Short became Labour's representative in Ladywood; she subsequently went on to win with a majority of 9,030 votes. Her margin increased steadily with every subsequent election until it peaked in 1997 at 60.8%.

Clare Short continued to sit here as an independent MP after the Labour whip was withdrawn and she gave up her role in the cabinet as Secretary for International Development.

Following the reduction in Birmingham's parliamentary seats in 1997, Ladywood inherited the wards of Nechells and Aston. In 2008 the constituency saw further boundary changes when part of Aston came from Birmingham Perry Barr, a piece of Ladywood from Birmingham Edgbaston and a part of Nechells from the then Birmingham Sparkbrook and Small Heath. The seat conceded several part wards to its neighbours former Ladywood boundaries being chiselled away from all sides. Washwood Heath to the south-east, Perry Barr to the north and Lozells & East Handsworth to the north-west. However,  the south eastern borders expanded with the aquirement of Nechells and Ladywood.

Ladywood's designation as an inner city seat is compounded by it's coverage of the majority of Birmingham city centre and including the Soho, Nechells, and Aston wards slightly to the north as well as Ladywood itself.

Ladywood is the most central ward, with the Aston and Nechells wards to the north and northeast of the city centre comprising mainly post Second World War housing and having a large Muslim community. Birmingham Ladywood has one of the lowest number of professional and managerial workers in the country.

The Heart of Birmingham Primary Care Trust serves all wards within the constituency and was rated good for quality of services in both 2005/06 & 2006/07; with the 2006-07 financial year seeing 32% of spending being directed towards health by the Ladywood Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.
