Constituency Profile:

Labour enjoyed a succession of victories in this constituency until Jocelyn Cadbury gained the seat for the Conservatives in 1979 with a 10% swing. However, following Cadbury's death in 1982, control returned to Labour after John Spellar succeeded in a necessary by election. Control of Northfield then switched back to the Conservative's when Spellar was beaten at the 1983 general election by Roger King. He in turn remained incumbent for the next nine years until losing to Labour's Richard Burden, who has held the seat since, in 1992.

Changes to the constituency's boundaries for 2010 see Birmingham Northfield gain parts of Kings Norton, Northfield and Weoley from Birmingham Selly Oak. The constituency's elongated upper corridor was narrowed following the loss of part of Bournville.

The location of Birmingham Northfield is to the south of the city.

Northfield's predominant industry was always car manufacturing, specifically the Rover plant at Longbridge, the closure of which had a devastating effect on the areas economy and employment.
