Constituency Profile:

Jeff Rooker first won the seat for Labour in 1974 and over the subsequent elections managed to build a formiddable majority to 18,957 in 1997.

Following his retirement prior to the 2001 general election he was succeeded by Khalid Mahmood, who was returned in 2005 with a 7,948-vote majority.

Constituency boundaries have been altered for the upcoming 2010 election which see the remaining parts of Oscott and Lozells & East Handsworth wards, bringing them wholly under the constituency border; on the down side it has lost parts of Aston and Kingstanding.

The constituency is located to the northwest of the city.

Birmingham Perry Barr is made up of two distinctive parts, as a whole the constituency is characterised by leafy suburbs, particularly in Oscott and Perry Bar, but the Handsworth wards have areas of council development and inner city features.

The constituency's primary provision of employment comes from manufacturing, public administration, education and health. With over 4,000 employees, Birmingham City University stands out as being the largest local employer and is also based in the constituency.

All wards in the constituency are served by the  Heart of Birmingham Primary Care Trust.
