Election 2010 Results - Selly Oak Constituency

Add News

Constituency Profile:

Birmingham Selly Oak was first formed in 1955, from which time it was controlled by the Conservative MP Harold Gurden up until 1974 when it changed to Labour following Tom Litterrick's win.

The conservative's subsequently took back control of the seat at the next general election by way of Anthony Beaumont-Dark who held on to it for three terms.

In 1992 Lynne Jones, on behalf of Labour, won the seat with a majority of 2,060 votes and then in 1997, on a 12% swing, she won the largest majority in the seat's history.

Jones successfully defended her seat again in the 2005 general election.

Election 2010 sees considerable changes to the Selly Oak constituency borders which follows changes to the boundaries of the 24 wards that make up the Birmingham constituencies. Only two part-wards that existed in the seat's previous incarnation are still in place, these being a part of Bournville ward and a part of Selly Oak ward. The wards of Billesley and Brandwood are new to the constituency which are balanced by the loss of Sparkbrook and Springfield to Birmingham Hall Green.

The seat's image has been altered from one of 'leafy suburbs' around Selly Oak and Bournville wards by the extensive council estate development in the Kings Norton ward.

The overhaul of the constituency will now transform the picture: Bournville, which now falls entirely inside the seat's borders, has retained much of its affluence and houses many white-collar residents who commute to the city or university.
